For many it could be agreeable that what you listen to when you are younger grows old with you. That kind of weird thing happens, when the fans grow old with the band.

Suddenly, you find yourself at a Bowling For Soup concert where everyone in the band, audience and yourself have gained twenty stone in weight and you are all wearing ‘triple-X and sexy’ sized t-shirts. It should be noted that HEYUP sound nothing like Bowling for Soup, I’m merely trying to comment on how the lead singer from Bowling For Soup has put on a few pounds.

The point I am trying to make is that I grew up on a lot of alternative rock music and so whenever I listen to an alternative rock band I get a bit of a spot for them.

Only A Game’ starts with a crackled guitar and has a double vocal track running all the way through. It has a D.I.Y kind of vibe but it has not been layered with inaudible crap, the producer has buffed it so that we can still pick parts out. This means that you can pick out the nice layering of that vocal double tracking.

HEYUP are a power trio with a really nice, simplistic approach to their music. Recently performing with local legends PAWS, HEYUP have their genre and influences in a secured place to make a success out of themselves. From the music that I have grown up listening to these guys remind me of an early Cloud Nothings, Bass Drum of Death, Surf Dads, Wavves (I fucking love that band), Pinact and Dead Fiction.

Locally you can see Chris, Callum and Luc proving my point on the 2nd of March at The Hug and Pint. If you are hanging around the Dundee area then you can watch them (not do a Bowling For Soup impression) at Conroy’s Basement on the 28th of this month.

Only A Game’ is being released today, go listen to it! Let me know what you think.
