Its International Woman’s Day and what are you going to do to shorten the gender gap? Here at Undercurrent we’re bringing you the release of Hannah Slavin’s new music video ‘I Don’t Give A Fuck About You’ made with support from Odd Socks production. The video was created, filmed and produced by a team of 11 females.
The video is shot in Slavin’s home town and is based on it being her own rom-com movie. Speaking of the track, its a well written, pop indulgent anthem but delivers a deeper meaning of not getting back with your ex and of not giving a fuck and moving on. The video was created, filmed and produced by a team of 11 females.
How did International Woman’s day begin? Its roots can be traced back to 1908, when 15,000 women marched through the city of New York demanding voting rights, better pay and shorter work hours. A year on from then, February 28th was recognised in America as National Woman’s day. From there, in 1910 a woman called Clara Zetkin who was the leader of the ‘women’s office’ for the Social Democratic Party in Germany tabled the idea for an International Woman’s Day.
‘I Don’t Give A Fuck About You’ is the second single from the Glasgow born native and brings to light the truths of the divides in the music industry about the pay gap and equal rights between women and men. When asked about her feelings towards the situation, Slavin had this to add;
“As a female within the music industry, I know the divide and disadvantages that come alongside that. I feel that we all have a responsibility to break out of what we are told the normal thing to do is and actively seek out working with other females within the industry. I’m very lucky to live in a city where the ‘women support women’ culture is incredibly strong and encouraging. I think it’s made me think more about how I can help champion more females in every aspect of the creative industry and not just music making.”

The music video is expertly shot with creative imagery. It is an amalgamation of beautiful balcony shots of Glasgow, colourfully bath shots filled with lemons (metaphor for a sour break up?) and Slavin showing no weaknesses as she dances through supermarkets, rejoices with friends and throws it all back to the man at the end of the video. Its a wee belter of a tune riddled with sassy lyrics but displays a more vulnerable side to Slavin.
Cutting back to the history of IWD, in 1911 following Clara Zetkin’s suggestion, IWD was celebrated for the first time in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. Originally the day was celebrated on March 19 but was changed to March 8th in 1913. However, it wouldn’t be until 1975 that the United Nations would recognise this date.
This year the theme for IWD 2020 is #EachforEqual, recognising all of the actions we can take as individuals to challenge stereotypes, fight prejudice and celebrate women’s achievements.
‘I Don’t Give a Fuck About You,’ is the first release of the year which I am sure will see the BBC Music Introducing ‘One to Watch 2020 artist’ go far. Slavin’s hard work and drive has seen her been billed at the Belladrum Festival, included in the King Tut’s Summer Nights and she has supported Mae Miller and Lousia and Sigma.
Tonight! she’ll be performing in Leeds at the Nation of Shopkeepers as part of Intentional Woman’s day. We wish her all the best with her performance and fully support her in her determination to get this song out there and listened to by the many.
