You need to understand that it is rare most of the time- well in fact, rare nearly all of the time to find a band sounding so good at this level- nailing everything that you are looking for. Aboriginals released their first five track EP titled, ‘Infinite Cinema’ at the beginning of August. As a fan of Queens of the Stone Age, Mastodon’s more commercial noises and Nirvana. This EP soothes my needs of needing to listen to something that makes me want to find my nearest local, sink a pint, bounce the pint glass off of a regular’s dome and then shout at the ceiling “ONE MARE TUNE”. I can’t do that though because; 1) it’s early in the day and 2) stirring shite in your local gets you barred.
Anyway, ‘I’m Not Young Forever’ (the last track on the EP) is aggressive and is more relevant than ever these days. You will refer to it especially when you listen along to lines such as, “living is a problem, when you’re living like a slave, you find yourself worse for wear and digging your own grave.” For me I like that Aboriginals have put it at the end because it almost like finishing on a crescendo.
The opening track ‘Won’t You Be Mine’ has a fooking cracker of a drum intro and when the band explodes in and the song bombs along you feel like a bad ass- even if I am wearing slippers and swinging in my desk chair while listening to ‘Infinite Cinema’. Also, see when it hits that middle bit and it is just the drummer and the guitarist it gets you wildly geared up. Aw man, I would love to see and hear this track live, watch the carnage of an atmosphere it would create.
I want to say ‘Cordelia’ (the second track) is a dig at a lady but I could be wrong, I have been wrong many times before. The song is so well written, the EP is so well written. Adding in the factor that producer Chris Marshall (Baby Strange, The Dunts and Gerry Cinnamon) jumped on this project, gets it to the level it needs to be at, to have that energy that is caught in between each note and accent of the rhythm.
I think I’ve said enough to get you to stream, buy or watch these guys live. Their next gig is Live @ Troon in Ayrshire, on the 8th of September at 4pm. Come along, you’ll find me at the back wearing slippers, sinking pints and shouting “ONE MARE TUNE”.
