Words by Craig Carrington-Porter

Standing in my pants, its a frantic scene in the kitchen as I attempt to boil chicken, potatoes, carrots and broccoli. In the background I’ve got ‘Dressed To Kill’ by Dead Fiction thwacking through my bluetooth speakers. Its another anthem written by the three piece which features on their new, five track EP. ‘Dressed To Kill’ has a blissful guitar riff, the entire song is built on that successful, alt-rock formula of: a catchy riff, a hook chorus, bring it down in the bridge and then remind these fuckers how to have a good time.

The potatoes over boil, stirring them with a trusty wooden spoon and adding a pinch of salt, they calm down back into the warmth of their own pot. I have listened to the whole EP chronologically but I am currently picking off songs at random. The EP opens with ‘Bloodline’, a nostalgia journey back to the alt rock times of we were promised jetpacks. Craig Macleod’s distorted vocals set the tone for the entire EP.  ‘Bloodline’ itself finishes on an amped up instrumental including a chant that leads you into ‘Crushed by The Weight’- a favourite for the undercurrent team- which is still the  song of choice for my anarchy thoughts.

‘No Time’ was one of their first tracks to premiere and saw the trend kick off for the Dundee based three piece. The EP is being released through the indie-label, Meraki records on the 30th of November.

I take out a plate from the cupboard, set the table and still refuse to put any trousers on. The self titled EP finishes on ‘Polarised Parts’, a new track which hasn’t been shed light onto yet. It is a darker song, that kind of sentence normally worries people but I think it is well placed. It is intricately different, both lyrically and musically which shows a more in depth observation by the band. Relating this song to feelings, stopping you from moshing (in my case moshing into my fucking kitchen cupboards and fridge) it makes you pause for thought and look through the window pane of your own emotions.

I sit down to my well orchestrated meal, at my functional kitchen table, like a barbarian, still in my pants and I’ve not even showered yet- it is six in the evening! Taking a mouthful of broccoli, water dripping down my mouth I am scrolling through Dead Fiction’s Facebook page when I realise that they have baseball jerseys.

“Aw ya’ fucking dancer, thats Christmas sorted.” I’ll be reminding my girlfriend about that closer to the time.

Dead Fiction’s new EP is available to listen on the 30th of November across all major platforms, keep up to date with them. Give them a like on Facebook, follow on Instagram and a retweet on twitter. Fuck twitter, I hate twitter.
